Description

Classic American Buttercream Frosting is a smooth, creamy, and sweet frosting perfect for cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. Made with unsalted butter, powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract, this frosting whips up light and fluffy with a rich buttery flavor balanced by the sweetness of the sugar. It’s versatile and easy to customize for any dessert decorating needs.

Ingredients

Scale

Buttercream Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 ounces heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Salt: In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream 1 cup unsalted butter and ½ teaspoon salt on low speed until the mixture is pale and creamy, ensuring a smooth base for the frosting.
  2. Add Powdered Sugar and Heavy Cream: Gradually add 4 cups powdered sugar and 2 ounces heavy cream a little at a time, alternating between each, while mixing on low speed over about 3 minutes. Adjust the consistency if needed by adding an additional ½ cup powdered sugar or 1 tablespoon heavy cream at a time until the desired texture is achieved.
  3. Add Vanilla and Whip: Incorporate 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, then increase the mixer speed to high and whip the frosting for 2 to 3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl every minute to ensure even mixing and to achieve a light, fluffy texture.
  4. Use or Store: Use the frosting immediately on cakes or cupcakes, or store it in an airtight container for future use.

Notes

  • Make sure butter is softened to room temperature for smoother creaming and easier mixing.
  • Adjust the frosting consistency by adding more powdered sugar for a stiffer frosting or more heavy cream for a softer one.
  • For colored frosting, add gel food coloring after vanilla extract and whip until evenly distributed.
  • Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week; bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.
  • This American Buttercream is sweeter and lighter than butter-based frostings like Swiss or Italian meringue buttercream.
