Scale
Buttercream Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 ounces heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Cream Butter and Salt: In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream 1 cup unsalted butter and ½ teaspoon salt on low speed until the mixture is pale and creamy, ensuring a smooth base for the frosting.
- Add Powdered Sugar and Heavy Cream: Gradually add 4 cups powdered sugar and 2 ounces heavy cream a little at a time, alternating between each, while mixing on low speed over about 3 minutes. Adjust the consistency if needed by adding an additional ½ cup powdered sugar or 1 tablespoon heavy cream at a time until the desired texture is achieved.
- Add Vanilla and Whip: Incorporate 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, then increase the mixer speed to high and whip the frosting for 2 to 3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl every minute to ensure even mixing and to achieve a light, fluffy texture.
- Use or Store: Use the frosting immediately on cakes or cupcakes, or store it in an airtight container for future use.
Notes
- Make sure butter is softened to room temperature for smoother creaming and easier mixing.
- Adjust the frosting consistency by adding more powdered sugar for a stiffer frosting or more heavy cream for a softer one.
- For colored frosting, add gel food coloring after vanilla extract and whip until evenly distributed.
- Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week; bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.
- This American Buttercream is sweeter and lighter than butter-based frostings like Swiss or Italian meringue buttercream.
