Ingredients
Scale
Caramelized Onions
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Dip Base
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional)
- Chopped fresh chives for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 30–40 minutes until the onions are deeply golden and caramelized. Lower the heat if they start to burn to ensure a sweet, rich flavor.
- Cool the Onions: Once the onions are caramelized, remove the skillet from heat and allow the onions to cool completely to prevent curdling when combined with the dairy.
- Prepare the Dip Base: In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and the optional lemon juice. Stir well to blend all the flavors.
- Combine and Chill: Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the dip base until evenly mixed. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This resting time allows the flavors to meld and develop fully.
- Serve: Before serving, stir the dip again. Garnish with chopped fresh chives if desired. Serve with chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables for dipping.
Notes
- Substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream for a lighter, tangier dip.
- Prepare the dip a day ahead to deepen flavors and enhance the taste.
- Use sweet onions to achieve a milder, sweeter dip, or opt for red onions for a sharper and more pungent flavor profile.
