Ingredients
Scale
Apples
- 2 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, cored and sliced into rings)
Toppings
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (toasted, if preferred)
- 1 tbsp sea salt (optional, for a salty-sweet flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples: Slice the apples into rings about 1/2-inch thick and remove the core. Alternatively, you can cut them into wedges if preferred.
- Melt the Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the milk chocolate chips in 30-second intervals, stirring between each session until fully melted. Alternatively, melt the chocolate over a double boiler. Stir in the vanilla extract for added flavor.
- Assemble the Turtle Apple Slices: Lay the apple slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle each apple slice with caramel sauce, followed by a spoonful of melted chocolate.
- Add Nuts and Salt: Sprinkle the chopped pecans or walnuts over the chocolate and caramel, pressing them lightly into the topping. If desired, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt on top of each slice for a salty-sweet contrast.
- Let Chocolate Set: Allow the chocolate to set for a few minutes at room temperature, or refrigerate for faster results to harden the toppings.
- Serve & Store: Once the chocolate has hardened slightly, serve immediately. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
Notes
- Use crisp apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture and tangy flavor contrast.
- To toast nuts, spread them on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- For a richer flavor, use homemade caramel sauce.
- If you prefer a more intense chocolate flavor, you can substitute milk chocolate chips with dark chocolate chips.
- Allow the chocolate topping to fully set before stacking or storing to prevent sticking.
- Adjust the amount of sea salt based on your preference for sweet-salty balance.
