Description
A delicious twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich, this Pizza Grilled Cheese combines melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses with savory turkey pepperoni and marinara sauce, all sandwiched between seasoned, buttered bread slices and cooked to golden perfection on the skillet.
Ingredients
Scale
Bread and Butter
- 4 slices of bread (sourdough, white, or whole wheat)
- 2 tbsp butter (softened)
Fillings and Seasonings
- ½ cup marinara or pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 12 slices turkey pepperoni (or preferred topping)
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp Italian seasoning
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. Then sprinkle each buttered side evenly with garlic powder and Italian seasoning to infuse the bread with extra pizza-inspired flavor as it toasts.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on a clean surface. Spread about ¼ cup of marinara sauce on the inside of each slice. Layer evenly with shredded mozzarella, grated Parmesan, the turkey pepperoni slices, and any additional toppings you prefer. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
- Toast the Sandwich: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place the assembled sandwiches carefully onto the pan. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes on one side, gently pressing down with a spatula to ensure even melting and toasting. Flip the sandwiches carefully and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until the bread is golden brown and the cheese inside has melted completely.
- Serve and Enjoy: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them rest for a minute to cool slightly. Slice each sandwich in half and garnish with fresh chopped basil for an aromatic finish. Serve warm with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
Notes
- You can substitute turkey pepperoni for any preferred toppings such as ham, mushrooms, or vegetables.
- Use any type of bread you enjoy, such as sourdough for a tangy bite or whole wheat for a heartier texture.
- Cooking on medium-low heat ensures the cheese melts without burning the bread.
- For a richer flavor, you can add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes or a drizzle of olive oil before serving.
- Serve with a crisp side salad or a bowl of tomato soup for a complete meal.
