Ingredients
Scale
For the Caramelized Onions
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar
For the Dip
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional)
- Chopped fresh chives for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 30–40 minutes until the onions turn deeply golden and caramelized. Lower the heat if they begin to burn to ensure even cooking. Once done, remove from heat and allow the onions to cool completely.
- Prepare the Dip Base: In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and lemon juice if using. Stir until all ingredients are well incorporated.
- Mix in Caramelized Onions: Add the cooled caramelized onions to the dip base and mix thoroughly to combine the flavors evenly.
- Chill to Develop Flavors: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dip for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld together beautifully.
- Serve: Before serving, give the dip a good stir and garnish with chopped fresh chives if desired. Serve alongside chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables for a delicious appetizer.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream.
- Prepare the dip a day ahead to deepen the flavor.
- Use sweet onions for a milder taste or red onions for a slightly sharper flavor.
